Couple reunited with lost wedding album thanks to sleuthing by Cape Town library staff
A couple who lost their wedding photo album more than two decades ago have been reunited with their precious memories thanks to detective work by the staff at a library in Cape Town. The album resurfaced recently during a tidy-up session at Strandfontein Library on the False Bay coast. It had been found previously at the library but was placed in a storeroom as staff did not know the couple’s identity.

A police investigator who is appearing as a witness at the Madlanga commission of inquiry, told the commission on Wednesday that the murder investigation of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart was marred by interference, intimidation and a web of corruption linked to a manipulated Transnet tender allegedly involving relatives of the main suspect, Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu has denied allegations made against him by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that he is interfering in police investigations. On July 6, Mkhwanazi held a media briefing in which he accused senior law enforcement officials, including Mchunu, of interfering in police investigations.

Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi has been forced to disband his traffic wardens, known as amaPanyaza, after a dispute about their status. Since the launch in 2023, there has been a dispute about whether the amaPanyaza should operate as peace officers, crime prevention wardens or traffic wardens. While Lesufi intended that they assist in combating crime in Gauteng, it appears the police had taken issue with their legitimacy and operational status.

Policeman claims murder suspect lodged false carjacking case after woman’s death
A KwaZulu-Natal murder suspect allegedly opened a false carjacking case hours after Glenwood guest house owner Jacqueline Needham, 69, was killed at her property on August 11 2022. This was the testimony of Sgt Makhosezwe Moses Nxumalo from the Umbilo police station, who took a statement from Manelisi Mzotelwa Jali, 24, at about 2am.
Milnerton High School suspends eight pupils over assault video
The governing body of Milnerton High School in Cape Town has approved the precautionary suspension of eight pupils after an assault incident last week that was captured on video. The footage depicts a pupil being physically and verbally attacked by a group of boys while others stand by, some cheering on the perpetrators.

R800k fine for truck operator with expired licence and unpaid fines
A freight truck operator has been fined R800,000 for operating with an expired licence and many unpaid traffic fines. eThekwini municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the fine was issued during a joint law enforcement operation. “The operator was recently stopped during a routine freight compliance blitz conducted at South Coast Road and Solomon Mhlangu Drive,” she said.
